Our Programs
The Parents’ Association supports programing year-round, both inside and outside of the classroom. Below is a snapshot of some of the programs.
After School Program
The After School Program at PS196Q (ASP) offers our students in grades K-5 a safe, enriching and fun environment every day after school. Families can choose from a wide variety of classes, including soccer, origami, Lego and Wii, music, chess, farm-to-table cooking and so much more.
Our After School program starts as soon as classes are dismissed, with pick-up at 5:00 p.m. and extended stay for an additional charge up to 6:30 p.m. There is also an option for early morning drop-off, for an additional charge, starting at 7:30 a.m.
Maria Romero is the ASP Director.

School Assemblies
We host school assemblies as a way to build school community, spark curiosity, and enrich our students' learning beyond the classroom.
Past assemblies have featured exciting and educational experiences, including professionals from the Hall of Science, a high-energy anti-bullying message delivered through a BMX bike performance, interactive storytelling and illustrating with Jeff Hopkins, and inspiring musical performances from Brooklyn Technical High School's orchestra, choral soloists, and jazz band—and many more!
Author Visits
A school author visit is a special event where authors come to speak with students about their books, writing process, and what it’s like to be a writer. Each author is carefully chosen to match the interests and reading levels of specific grade levels.
During the visit, students can ask questions, learn about storytelling, and get inspired to read and write more. Families also have the option to purchase signed books in advance—making the experience even more memorable!
Book Swap
Students were invited to bring in gently used books they no longer need and exchange them for different books brought by others. It’s a fun, cost-free way to refresh their bookshelf and discover new stories. Book swaps encourage students to read more, give their old books new life, and build a sense of community through sharing.
This year's book swap was a great success, with over 100 students donating books and helping them find new homes. Extra books were donated to the Jamaica Community Partnership to continue spreading the joy of reading.
