PA MEETING MINUTES 2009-2010

PS 196 Parents Association- Meeting Minutes

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

OPENING

In attendance were the PA parents, The PA Exec. Board (Val Weintraub, Liz Gordon, and Lisa Goldenberg).

Val Weintraub opened the meeting. The minutes from Oct. ’09 were reviewed and accepted by Shelley Weintraub and seconded by Lynn Fischer.

Be Cool At After School- Dennis

Dennis wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving! Be Cool At After school is going very well. The Fall ’09 Session overview is as follows:

  • 10 Cases of ice packs were bought for school
  • 2 Luncheons for teachers were done this month
  • 26 Children have signed up for Ms. Ginzberg’s reading and writing workshop
  • Origami workshop has been busy making really cool stuff
  • Budget overview
  • December events:
  • Cookie Portrait December 10, 2009
  • Project Hope December 2009
  • Wacky Fun Friday December 18, 2009

$600 was used for 2 luncheons- clerical day & parent/teacher conference day ($300 each). Many teachers and the custodians thanked the PA.

The budget is on target for spring. Payroll was decreased and is much lower than last year.

Project Hope is a program on Long Island that provides a place for the homeless where they can shower, clean up, and collect toiletries, etc. Bags will be sent home in early January to collect toiletries to donate.

Blankets for Buddies are a program to help collect blankets for animals. Ms. Gaudio is very interested in supporting this cause. Shelley Weintraub and Jeni Byers offered to help out.

PS 303- Dennis wanted to address this issue and reassure our PA that there is nothing for us to worry about for our after school program. Missing $$ allegations from PS 303 are untrue and Dennis was put in an uncomfortable position by the principal. He is currently suing for $7,800, which would have been his salary. There is no investigation currently going on.

VP Election Run Off

After voting was completed- Pepa Tanousis was announced as our new PA Vice President. Congratulations, Pepa!!

School Supplies- Val Weintraub

After numerous phone calls, Val was able to get

  • $250 Free Supplies
  • $315.70 Rebate
  • $455.80 No glue
  • $1,021.50

Thank you, Val!

Treasurer- Liz Gordon

The monthly financial report indicates the total PA and BCAS income as $27,049.53. The total expenses are $36,225.04. The ending balance of both accounts $80,865.15.

Liz is holding $600 for Ms. Singh’s bench. The Election Day bake sale raised $1,000. The $$ will be designated for Theater Arts. Thank you to all who helped out. Thanks Emily for organizing.

Mrs. Steinberg is retiring and is not well. It was decided that Emily Ades would put together a letter to collect donations.

Shelley Weintraub suggested a gift for our former principal, Mrs. Hughes. The PA offered $250 for the gift.

Lice- Jodi Freed

The Lice Check Team found a class in the school with 7 cases of lice, 5 of which had crawling with bugs. The children’s parents were notified but many were back in school the next day. The Dept. of Health will only allow the nurse to send children home that have bugs, not nits in their hair. Lists have been created by the head check team and they re also being tracked by the nurse. Unfortunately, the nurse cannot check over 600 heads.

The head check team would like to put together a schedule of checks so that they may follow up. Val will speak to Mrs. Migliano to send out another informational letter. If the team is able to check heads following a schedule, parent volunteers will be needed.

Fundraising- Jackie Astacio & Pamela Montes

The 5th grade bake sale - $803.55.

Pies & Cakes- $150.00

Ms. Chocolate orders are due Nov. 30th.

Fundraising would like to do a bottle water collection. Bottles returned are 5 cents per bottle. Donna will look into collection bins.

Pamela showed us the Kidstuff Coupon Book (for New York). It is filled with hundreds of coupons. The cost would be $25 per book. This would be available for purchase in September 2010.

.

Winter Concert (& Bake Sale) - Lisa Goldenberg

The PA would like to do a Bake Sale the night of the Winter Solstice Concert. Looking for parents to donate baked goods or volunteer to help run table. All $ donations will go towards Theater Arts.

Membership Committee- Raffle

The membership committee raffled off 2 tickets to Alvin Ailey. Mario was the winner- it was his first time attending a PA mtg. Congrats!

Meeting adjourned 8:39pm
